Events

MLK Parade & Concert

We gather to walk or ride a trolley in the MLK parade celebration in January every year. We join the greater community of Savannah in solidarity with the beloved Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy for peace and justice. After the parade we host a city wide concert at our church to celebrate that solidarity.

Savannah Pride

We organize a booth at this city wide celebration for the LBGTQ community of Savannah. We encourage people stopping by the booth to come to our church and join our community for a Sunday Service. The weekend of activities is frequented by many in our congregation. The celebration is in the fall.

Committees and Programs

Green Team

The Green Team focuses on environment, climate and sustainability, taking steps to implement change by community involvement and education. Since its inception two years ago it has hosted public presentations, panel discussions, and film screenings on plastic, sustainable landscaping, sustainable eating, sustainable transportation, and climate change. Members are involved with the 100% Savannah coalition working to transition Savannah to 100% clean, safe, renewable to by 2035. The UU Green Team hosted both the 2019 Candidate Forum on Climate Change, as well as the Public Educational Town Hall on the 100% Plan, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah. Green Team members played an integral role in planning the 2019 Climate Rally in Forsyth Park.

ARC - Anti Racism Committee

This committee spearheaded our effort to become one of the early UU congregations to successfully adopt the 8th principle (see the overview link below to learn more about the 8th principle)! The ARC offers programming and strategies for the congregation to become aware of racism in all its forms and to take action steps to overcome racism within ourselves and our community.

JUST: Justice Unites Savannah Together

Justice Unites Savannah Together (JUST) is an interfaith group of 22 local congregations that works for justice for the Savannah area. In 2021 and 2022, JUST has significantly impacted two focus areas:

 Affordable Housing

  • In Dec. 2021, the City Council unanimously passed the proposed investment of $7 million into the Affordable Housing Fund as a downpayment in the plan proposed by the Housing Savannah Task Force.

  • In 2022, we won a commitment from City Manager Jay Melder to recommend to the City Council an investment of at least $2 million into the Savannah Affordable Housing Fund in the 2023 budget and to target this funding towards individuals or families making 80% or less of the area median income.

Pre-trial Detention

  • We won a commitment from District Attorney Shalena Cook Jones to send us her plan to fully fund and develop additional support for the Early Intervention Program, and to meet quarterly to track EIP's progress.

Feel free to contact Kris (kriscarroll16@gmail.com) or Steve (rshudder04@gmail.com) if you'd like to join us or you have any questions.

Danny’s Brown Box

People make donations of food and school supplies for the children to help supplement their resources to help them through life.

Backpack Buddies

We donate food for school children to carry in these specially designated backpacks so that they will have some extra food for their weekend when they do not have the resources of the school food programs. Backpack Buddies

Family Promise

Homeless families who need homes, jobs and support for their families are drawn to this program that helps them to get a job, obtain suitable and affordable housing and skills to provide for their families. We provide a weeklong shelter for them at the church and give them food for all their meals and company for their transition.

Celebrating/Strengthening Families

This is a program for the convicted clients of nonviolent crimes who wear an ankle responder so that they are free of jail. They are required to come to the Baptist Hall on Tuesdays for programs to help them better apply themselves to a job and living conditions without reverting to crime. We provide a meal at these Tuesday gatherings and serve the meal.

Inner City Night Shelter

We help with our contributions and, when able, serve the dinner meal on the third Sunday of the month and provide sandwiches for the homeless.

Congregations in Service

Saturday and Sunday once in the fall and once in the spring a number of local church congregations gather to work together on community projects. The projects come mostly from charitable organizations who are looking for “fix ups” to their buildings or grounds. Other projects involve visits to nursing homes and clean ups at parks. We gather for breakfast and lunch for fellowship before and after these projects.
